Director Tan, Chih-chieh began as an actor devoted to studying performance systems, and turned to directing out of a desire to create. With a master's degree and solid acting skills, he is able to guide actors more precisely and carry out meticulous stage blocking.
An Encounter with Pingpencao Theater: Practice Sparked by Chance
Five or six years ago, Director Tan was introduced by a teacher to the "Pingpencao Theater" in Changhua as an actor. This opportunity led him to officially join the troupe and begin long-term theatrical practice.
The All-Purpose Steward: One Minute of Performance, One Hour of Rehearsal
The director shoulders the responsibilities of aesthetics, rhythm, and atmosphere creation:
- Aesthetic coordination: Unifying the stage, costumes, and visual style.
- Craftsman's commitment: Upholding the principle of "one minute of performance requires one hour of rehearsal"; a 60-minute play requires approximately 60 hours of rehearsal.
- Atmosphere creation: Using music and performance intensity to evoke the audience's emotions.
Work Analysis: The Allegory of "The Money Tree"
Adapted from a Taiwanese folk song, the play uses a five-act structure featuring a clay pot, a stone mill, a flatfish, and a withered tree to convey the core message of "do not be greedy" in an entertaining and educational manner.
The Director's Reflection: The Joy of Being Tired
For Director Tan, the most profound memories of creation lie in the team's division of labor and everyone fulfilling their roles. Although the process is arduous, this sense of "joy in exhaustion" is the driving force behind his continued creative work.
