Scratch Games
Experience Four Games at Once | What We Created
① Motivation | Why We Started
During our research, we found that our classmates had very limited knowledge of theater and local theater troupes. We wanted to use Scratch web games to help classmates better understand theater, so that they would be more willing to step into the theater proactively and support local troupes.
② Designer | Who Designed These Games
Chen, Hsuan-yun is the designer of these four games. He enjoys designing Scratch games and voluntarily took on this task. He designed these games for Pingpencao Theater and for theater.
③ Design Process | How to Design
This time, I designed four games:
- "Your Role On Stage": uses a personality quiz format to help players understand what roles suit their personalities on stage. I first outlined different roles and used the image library in the canvas to find suitable graphics. I also searched online for character traits to design the questions.
- "Stage Moment": is a puzzle game. I simply used stage photos as materials and developed the game concept from that idea.
- "Poster Designer": is based on the fact that theater troupes need posters. It allows players to participate in the design process, which is an interaction that children who like graphic design will enjoy. Because the Scratch interface is limited, I used different pages—one page to edit elements and another page to arrange their positions.
- "Stage Smarts": tests how much everyone knows about theater. It was originally planned as an escape room game, but later it became a simple Q&A format. The questions are concepts my teacher mentioned when I was in the drama club.
④ Design Challenges | Challenges & Problem Solved
When I designed these games, I initially created them directly based on my own ideas. After finishing them, I realized that my classmates did not understand my way of thinking; in other words, they did not know how to play my Scratch games. We then spent a long time discussing and making adjustments. In the end, there may still be some minor issues that remain unresolved.
Another challenge was creating both Chinese and English versions. At first, I made the English version directly, but some classmates could not understand it, so I redesigned the layout and added Chinese.
Usually, the Scratch projects I create are purely games. This was the first time I combined knowledge with game design, and I created four games, which required a lot of time for adjustments. The process was quite tiring, but after completing them, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment.
