A Theatre Rooted in Place: Pingpengcao Theatre
Theatre in Everyday Life
Pingpengcao Theatre is a homegrown theatre troupe based in Shengang, Changhua, a coastal township in central Taiwan. In a place where access to performing arts has long been limited, its presence makes it possible for theatre to enter the everyday lives of people in Changhua.
Connecting Theatre with the Community
Over the years, Pingpengcao Theatre has developed a wide range of performances, including children's theatre, school-based productions, and issue-oriented shows. Rather than remaining within formal theatre spaces, it brings drama into classrooms and local communities.
Through this approach, theatre becomes part of everyday experience—something people can encounter, understand, and take part in.
Growing Within Local Conditions
Unlike theatre groups in major cities, Pingpengcao Theatre has developed within a local context, often facing limited resources and ongoing staff turnover. Its continued presence reflects not only persistence, but also a long-term commitment to the community it serves.
At the same time, its long-term engagement in the region has enabled the troupe to understand local preferences and needs. It actively cultivates local talent and regularly brings theatre into schools across Changhua, making theatrical resources more accessible and creating more opportunities for people to encounter and experience theatre in their daily lives.
Taken together, these efforts suggest that theatre, even outside major cultural centers, can take root and grow in meaningful ways.
Questions That Emerged
Our encounter with Pingpengcao Theatre led us to reflect on a deeper set of questions:
- How does a theatre troupe take root in a local community?
- What conditions allow it to sustain itself and continue to grow over time?
These questions form the starting point of this project.
